Techworld Post – The tools we need to make it easier in terms of processing data or information, namely spreadsheets. We can do spreadsheet management using software such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, WPS Office Spreadsheets, Zoho Sheets, Abacus, and Gnumeric. Spreadsheet software can process data in the form of rows and columns with analysis that works automatically.
The Meaning of Spreadsheets
Before we discuss further, it is better to understand what a spreadsheet is. Spreadsheet is a data / information processing system that is divided into columns and rows. The data can be in the form of calculations used to carry out comparative analysis. Other forms of analysis and calculations can be in the form of statistical analysis, accounting calculations, and making time schedules.
The spreadsheet application allows us to create and manipulate worksheets electronically. The worksheets are arranged in rows and columns that contain tables of interconnected values. That is, if the value in a column / row changes, then the value in the other columns / rows also changes.
We can gain many benefits from spreadsheets including creating tables, graphs, calculating statistical formulas, sales and purchase reports, financial statements, employee lists, event schedules, payroll, timeline, and many others.
Spreadsheets have space for data storage called cells. Each labeled cell is related to one another. For example A1, A2, A3, and so on. In general, spreadsheets are designed to be able to hold numeric data and short text strings. In addition, spreadsheets have the ability to provide an overview of graphical data relationships.
We can say that spreadsheets are simple versions of database programs because it does not have database query capabilities. The first spreadsheet application was created by Daniel Bricklin and Bob Frankston named VisiCalc. Furthermore, Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft Excel emerged as the most popular spreadsheet applications to date.
The Functions of Spreadsheet
Spreadsheets are basically useful for facilitating data / information processing in the form of numbers and letters that are widely used in various fields. The use of spreadsheets varies for business purposes to analyze statistical data.
- Perform various types of calculations such as multiplication, addition, and division
- Creating a data table
- Create statistical data
- Perform statistical and graph analysis
- Creating a database
Types of Spreadsheets Software
Data processing applications are able to handle problems related to data and numbers. Data in spreadsheet applications are often used in the field of business and education in the form of scientific research such as thesis.
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet developed by Microsoft for PCs or laptops with Windows, MacOS, and for mobile phones with Andorid and iOS. This replaces Lotus 1-2-3 which has been discontinued and has been used for various purposes. Equipped with a programming language called Visual Basic for Application, Microsoft Excel displays various functions to facilitate work.
Function is a predetermined formula for performing calculations using certain values and sequences. Basically, all spreadsheet programs include sum, average, count, maximum value, and minimum value.
Apache OpenOffice Calc
Being an alternative to Microsoft Office, OpenOffice started as StarOffice which was acquired by Sun Microsystem in 1999. Later in 2011, this platform was donated to Apache and has received 100 million downloads since the acquisition. In terms of appearance and features, OpenOffice includes Calc, the spreadsheet module which is almost the same as the old version of Microsoft Office.
The main features of Calc, amongst one of which is DataPilot alowing users to import raw data in various formats. Calc also offers a variety of Wizards to guide users through various processes and support.
Part of Google Docs, Sheets offers the functionality you expect from a spreadsheet application. Among them are using standard formula elements, drag-to-fill, and simple formatting tools. Integrated with Google Drive, all Shets documents can be saved to the cloud and downloaded in different formats.
As with other Google Docs products, Sheets allow users to work on documents with others simultaneously. In addition, users can see other people editing the sheet. There is a chat window to communicate with others quickly and easily. Users can share individual worksheets publicly or with certain people.
WPS Office Spreadsheets
This spreadsheet from WPS Office was developed by China software developer Kingsoft. Spreadsheets is 100% compatible with Microsoft Excel and supports xls, xlsx and csv files. This platform includes hundreds of formulas and functions that are commonly used with dozens of categories so that users can analyze complex data easily.
Other features are built-in charts which include dozens of customizable charts such as columns, lines, pie, bars, scatter, and others. Users can analyze and summarize large amounts of data with pivot table features. There are also what-if analysis functions that allow users to better forecast and find solutions to complex problems.
Similar to Google Sheets, Zoho Sheets offers the functionality that users need without many striking additional features. Users can work real-time and access their worksheets from any device at any time. In addition, users can download worksheets in various formats and share them online.
