Techworld Post – Following the footsteps of Nintendo, Sony will launch the PlayStation Classic Mini at the end of 2018, to be exact on December 3. The PlayStation Classic is a small retro console that comes with 20 classic PlayStation games built in it. It comes with two original PlayStation mini controllers, having HDMI to connect to modern television devices. The twenty games in it could not be added later. In other words, this is the same as the NES and SNES Classic consoles where players are limited to the titles included with the system.

The PlayStation Classic design look is similar to the original PlayStation 1 but with a smaller size and some modern touches such as HDMI out and a power USB port. According to Sony, the PlayStation Classic size is around 45% of its original size. Not only small, the PlayStation Classic is also lightweight so it’s easy to pack and carry with you.

With the HDMI Out facility, you can connect the Playstation Classic to your favorite modern television. But a little disappointing, the PlayStation Classic’s maximum output resolution is 720p and also supports 480p. So, the PlayStation Classic doesn’t display good images when connected to a television with 1080p or even 4K resolution.

Along the top side of the PlayStation Classic, there are three buttons: Power, Open, and Reset. The Power button functions to turn on and off, while the Open button allows you to switch virtual discs in multi-disc games like Final Fantasy VII. While the Reset button allows you to make a resume point if you want to jump back to the game.

The basic difference between the original PlayStation console with the Classic is that the latter does not play the actual discs and there is no way to add games to it. In addition, PlayStation uses a virtual memory card so that all included game progress can be saved.

List of Games

Like the Nintendo mini console, the PlayStation games list cannot be changed or even added. The PlayStation Classic also can’t connect to the internet. The good news is that you don’t have to wait for a system update if you only want to play games. There are several original blockbusters on the list including Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy VII.

The following are 20 games found on the PlayStation Classic.

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr. Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Siphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild arms

In terms of overall quality, some of the games included are not the best. Also note that Japan has a different list of games. Before playing games, you will be asked to choose the language after booting the console for the first time that is very familiar. Then, there will be a list of 20 games arranged in alphabetical order and there is no way to sort or filter them.

PlayStation Classic Prices

Launched in December this year, the PlayStation Classic sells for $ 99.99, while in the UK it sells for £ 89.99. All units are equipped with two mini replicas from the original PlayStation controller.
